Project Highlights
Redevelopment of the Bird Island Research Station in South Georgia, including a new storage building, fuel store and site-wide energy efficiency improvements. The project was delivered within a highly constrained operational environment governed by South Georgian law and reliant on UK military transport for logistics and access.
The Challenge
The remote island location presented significant logistical and programme challenges. Personnel and materials depended on limited transport opportunities, while the station needed to remain capable of sustaining occupants for more than six months without external contact. The project also required a complete rebuild programme to be delivered within a short seasonal construction window.
Our Solution
We developed a delivery strategy tailored to the unique operational constraints of the site, carefully planning procurement, logistics and construction activities around restricted access periods and military transport requirements. The scheme combined new infrastructure with energy efficiency improvements to enhance the long-term performance and resilience of the research station.
