Project Highlights
A seven-year programme to design and deliver a new research and operations centre at Rothera Research Station, Antarctica, for the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). The project comprised a two-storey, 4,500m² facility containing stores, workshops, research preparation areas and plant space, designed to achieve a bespoke BREEAM accreditation.
The Challenge
Delivering a major construction project in one of the world’s most remote and environmentally sensitive locations required rigorous planning, procurement and cost management. The project needed to balance operational requirements, logistical constraints and sustainability objectives while establishing a robust delivery strategy for a complex build in Antarctica.
Our Solution
We led the planning, project management, cost control and procurement strategy for the scheme from inception through to contractor appointment. Using an open-book tendering approach, we successfully negotiated the main build contract, providing transparency on costs and ensuring the project was positioned for successful delivery before transitioning to the appointed contractor.
The Outcome
The project progressed from concept through procurement with a clear delivery strategy, robust cost certainty and an agreed main build contract. By establishing the commercial and procurement foundations for the scheme, we helped enable the delivery of a landmark research and operations facility for the British Antarctic Survey while reducing programme and commercial risk ahead of construction.
